Vibrating disc brake

author Posted by: Antony Delaney on date Jan 11th, 2008 | filed Filed under: General

For a while now I’ve had this very annoying squeak/vibration coming form my back disc brake.
I know the guys at work are getting sick of me moaning about it, but it’s very annoying and it sends horrid vibrations right though the bike frame. At first I thought it might be uneven wear on disc pads, and this by itself was causing this disc to vibrate as there was uneven pressure on the disc.

My second line of thought was, when coming off my bike as I do on many occasions, I’ve gone and knocked the disc and put a slight kink in it,so I swapped the front and back disc around, expecting the vibrations to start on my front. With no such luck the vibrations continued on the back.

I have had a few suggestions:
1) There could be an airlock somewhere along the line, causing the pads to clamp at different times.
2) When I dismantled the brake a while back I didn’t tighten the unit back onto the frame correctly.

No matter what I do I can not stop the back brake from vibrating.

  1. Matthew Said,

    Hi Antony

Before doing anything else, buy some copper grease, remove the brake pads and apply the grease to the rear of the pads (not the side that touches the disc). Refit the pads and test them.

Your not still moaning about this are you. If it aint broke, don’t fix it! Wait until it snaps in half when you are going down a hill!!

Man, my dad has been having the same problem, it sounds like, all last year on his ‘05 Stumpjumper. He can’t figure out what is making this vibration. He’s tightened every bolt, swaped in new pads, switched front and rear rotors, still no luck. I would love it someone could fix this thing for him, I don’t know what else to do.
    -cheers

I did speek to a guy in the bike shop he said it could be crack in your frame.

I dont think it is that, but you never know.
