I have been getting this knocking noise when I pedal for a while and I have not really done anything about it until it started getting worse. So on Friday, I decided I’ve had enough.

I have asked a few people of what the problem could be. I was 90% sure it was my bottom bracket as that’s where the sound seemed to come from.

Most of the people I asked said it sounded like a loose bottom bracket and is most likely to be that but I should try to eliminate the other possibilities first, such as the pedals or crank.

Not knowing how to remove the bottom bracket, as I have never done it before and not having all tools, I asked Matthew to give me a hand.

He said he had the necessary tools(Crank puller and the bottom bracket tool) so we started work.

The first step was to remove the crank arm, the one opposite side of the derailleur so to do this we needed to remove the cap that covers the crank bolt.

Our first issue was that we could not remove the cap as it was on very tight and not having the a tool with long enough leverage to shift it, it did not come off with ease.

Our second step was to insert the crank puller into the socket where the cap was before. We managed this with out too much of an issue until we broke it

so off the shop we go for a new one at the cost of £12.99.

Our third issue was when we tried to insert the new crank puller into my crank. It some how striped the thread on my crank arm. Now this is not the first time this has happened. It also happened when putting some new pedals onto my bike, I striped the thread in the crank then cross threaded it. So i guess I need a new crank at some point.

The next and last stage was for us to try and tighten up my bottom bracket. At out amazement when tightening it, it turned 1/4 of a turn. I dint think It would be that loose.

last stage is to put it all back together. Low and behold I here no more knocking.

I am now one happy man
